CERRO GORDO – Whiteville National overcame an early 5-0 Bladen County lead with a 7-run 2nd inning and claimed a 12-6 victory Sunday in a winner’s bracket game in the Diamond Youth Baseball District 2 Majors Tournament.
Bladen County will play Columbus County Monday in an elimination game at 7 p.m.
Chatham Rigsbee and Tyler Thurman smacked singles to start the Bladen 1st inning. Rigsbee was retired on Keithan Russ’ fielder’s choice. Joseph Burney pounded a double that scored Thurman, before Oxiel Campos blasted a 3-run home run that scored Russ and Burney. Malakye Rogers drilled a double then scored on Trevaugn Shipman’s fielder’s choice for a 5-0 Bladen lead.
Cassius’ home run highlighted the 7-run Whiteville 2nd inning
Russ led off the Bladen 6th with a single to left. Campos walked, and Rogers knocked in Russ with a double.
Campos slugged the 3-run home run and finished 2-for-2 at the plate. Rogers slammed 2 doubles and batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Burney doubled home a run and scored a run. Rigsbee, Thurman and Russ added 1 hit each. Russ scored 2 runs, and Thurman scored a run.
Thurman started and pitched 1.2 innings for Bladen allowing 8 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 1. Russ worked 1.1 scoreless innings of relief allowing 1 walk and striking out 1. Campos pitched 1.2 innings allowing 4 runs on 3 walks and 2 hits while striking out 4. Rigsbee came on to retire the final batter.
