PEMBROKE – Colt Lewis and Aiden Wooten combined to pitch a 5-hitter and strike out 15 batters Sunday to lead Elizabethtown to a 13-5 victory over Red Springs in an elimination game in the Diamond Youth Baseball District 9 Majors Tournament.
Elizabethtown advances to play Fairmont Monday at 6:30 p.m. in another elimination game.
Lewis started on the mound and struck out 7 of the 8 batters that he faced allowing 1 hit. Wooten worked the final 3.2 innings in relief allowing 5 runs on 4 hits, a walk and a hit batter while striking out 7.
Lewis pounded a double to left and scored the game’s 1st run in the Elizabethtown 1st inning. Baylor Gooden, Lyric Lawson, Mark McMichael and Cooper Patrick all drew walks in the 2nd inning, and Jabari Adams Peterson reached base on an error. Gooden and Lawson scored to push the lead to 3-0.
After Red Springs scored 4 runs in the 4th inning to take a 4-3 lead, Gooden was hit by a pitch in the Elizabethtown 4th. Grayson Leggett, McMichael and Adams Peterson all drew walks, and Owen Hall smashed a single to rightfield. Gooden, Leggett, McMichael, Patrick, Adams Peterson and Hall all scored to vault Elizabethtown back on top 9-4.
Khalil Moore raked a single to the left side to start the Elizabethtown 5th inning. Gooden was hit by a pitch, and Leggett and Patrick drew walks. McMichael and Adams Peteron cracked singles. Moore, Gooden, Leggett and McMichael all scored to stretch the lead to 13-4.
Lewis ripped the double, and Hall, Wooten, Moore, McMichael and Adams Peterson connected for 1 hit each. Gooden scored 3 runs. Leggett and McMichael scored 2 runs each. Hall, Lewis, Moore, Lawson, Patrick and Adams Peterson scored 1 run each.
