The Elizabethtown Rotary Club learned about plans for a future park to be located at the Elizabethtown Industrial Park.  The club met on the deck overlooking the lake at Cape Fear Vineyard and Winery on Wednesday.

Town Manager Eddie Madden introduced guest speaker Sara Burroughs. Madden said the town council is very grateful and thankful to Mary Greene for the property.

Sara Burroughs, presented the program regarding the Greene’s Lake property and the application being prepared for a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant to develop the property into a park. The property encompasses the perimeter of the lake that is located in the Industrial Park.

Burroughs said that the town staff will be going out to the public and seeking input for this park. She explained the park will be what is called a “passive recreation park.” Burroughs explained that passive recreation can take many forms such as hiking trails, nature trails, picnic shelters, and multi-use trails.

Active recreation parks are those that have such things as soccer fields and baseball or softball fields. Burroughs said these types of parks require a lot of maintenance such as lighting and mowing grass. She said this is not what is envisioned for this park.

“We are trying to figure out what people would like to see on this site,” said Burroughs.

She said the town is attempting to reach out to the public for input through the use of surveys and public interest sessions. Burroughs presented the Rotarians with a copy of a survey to complete regarding the types of activities they would like to see at the park.

Burroughs said once the surveys and public interest sessions are completed. A Master Plan for the park will be created and presented to the public at a later date.

When asked about the required match for a PARTf grant, Burroughs said the grant is an 80-20 match. She said the town’s match can consist of the land value or a monetary match.
