Elmer Lee Squires, age 70, of Kelly passed peacefully from his earthly life Thursday, January 20, 2022, at Lower Cape Fear Life-Care in Whiteville.

He was born August 17, 1951, in Bladen County, the son of William Gladys Squires and Vada Bigford Squires. In addition to his parents Elmer was preceded in death by his brother, Windell Squires; and sisters, Gurtha S. Smith and Evelyn S. Carroll.

Elmer is survived by his wife of 47 years, Donna B. Squires; daughter, Michelle Fisher (Dale); granddaughter, Taya Fisher; brother, William Charles “Tump” Squires; and several nieces and nephews.

Elmer was a member of Centerville Baptist Church.

He was born with a green thumb and was noted for growing peanuts and watermelons. Elmer was known in the community as the peanut and watermelon man. Elmer was a true craftsman when it came to woodworking as he made many pieces of unique and beautiful furniture for their home. Elmer found time for a favorite pastime, watching NASCAR. With an outgoing personality, Elmer made friends easily and never met a stranger. Most of all Elmer loved his family and was a devoted husband, daddy, granddaddy, brother, and loyal friend.

The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 24, 2022, at Centerville Baptist Church with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Pastor Allen Murray and Pastor Bryan Blackwell will conduct the service.

Burial will follow in Natmoore Baptist Church Cemetery.
