Evergreen’s Bill Johnson who worked with kids in youth baseball for over 50 years passed Tuesday at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Lifecare Center in Whiteville.

Johnson started his youth baseball career with the Tar Heel Youth League and then joined Dixie Youth Baseball in 1971. He coached 14 teams to the Dixie Youth Baseball World Series and his 1993 team won the DYB World Series Championship.
 
Due to his service to the community, the Evergreen baseball field was named the “Bill Johnson Field” in 1994. He is one of 27 North Carolinians inducted into DYB’s Danny Jones Club that honors outstanding leadership and contributions to Dixie Youth Baseball.
 
Bill served on the Columbus County Board of Education for 18 years and in 1992 Governor Beverly Perdue bestowed upon Bill the Order of the Longleaf Pine.
