A former Elizabethtown doctor and his former girlfriend appeared in federal court before US Magistrate Judge Robert B. Jones Jr on Monday in Wilmington.

Dr. Jong Whan Kim was advised of his rights and the charges against him were read, according to court documents. He is represented by attorneys James B. Polk and Raymond C. Tarlton of the law firm Tarlton Polk, PLLC in Raleigh.

Dr. Kim is facing charges of:

*Conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute a quantity of oxycodone, a quantity of oxycontin, a quantity of hydrocodone, a quantity of alprazolam (xanax) and a quantity of marijuana

*Distribution of a quantity of oxycodone and a quantity of alprazolam (xanax)

*Distribution of a quantity of oxycodone, a quantity of oxycontin and a quantity of alphrazolam (xanax)

*Distribution a quantity of oxycodone, a quantity of oxycontin and a quantity of marijuana and aiding and abetting

*Distribution a quantity of oxycodone, a quantity of oxycontin and a quantity of alphrazolam (xanax) and aiding and abetting

*Distribution a quantity of oxycodone, a quantity of oxycontin and a quantity of alphrazolam (xanax) and aiding and abetting

*Distribution of a quantity of oxycodone

*Distribution of a quantity of hydrocodone and a quantity of marijuana and aiding and abetting

The Assistant US Attorney Tim Severo asked for Dr. Kim to be held in federal custody and Judge Jones ruled Dr. Kim will remain in the custody of the US Marshal’s Service.

According to court records the case has been assigned to Federal District Judge Louise Flanagan. A detention hearing is set for Thursday, January 17, 2019, at 9 a.m. at the federal courthouse in Wilmington.

Court records also show an arraignment hearing is scheduled for March 12, 2019, in at the federal courthouse in New Bern.

Dr. Kim’s girlfriend, Tammy Lynn Thompson, also appeared in federal court Monday. Thompson asked for a court appointed attorney and James Perry of the law firm Perry, Perry and Perry in Kinston notified the court on Thursday morning he will be representing Thompson. The notice does not say if he is appointed, retained, or working pro bono.

Thompson was advised of her rights and the charges against her were read.

She is charged in federal court with two counts each:

*Conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute a quantity of oxycodone, a quantity of oxycontin, a quantity of hydrocodone, a quantity of alprazolam (xanax) and a quantity of marijuana

*Distribution of a quantity of oxycodone and a quantity of alprazolam (xanax)

*Distribution of a quantity of oxycodone, a quantity of oxycontin and a quantity of alphrazolam (xanax)

*Distribution a quantity of oxycodone, a quantity of oxycontin and a quantity of marijuana and aiding and abetting

*Distribution a quantity of oxycodone, a quantity of oxycontin and a quantity of alphrazolam (xanax) and aiding and abetting

*Distribution a quantity of oxycodone, a quantity of oxycontin and a quantity of alphrazolam (xanax) and aiding and abetting.

*Distribution of a quantity of oxycodone

*Distribution of a quantity of hydrocodone and a quantity of marijuana and aiding and abetting

*Three counts of distribution of marijuana.

According to court records, Thompson will have a detention hearing on Monday, January 14, 2019, at 10 a.m. at the federal court house in Wilmington. Court records also show an arraignment hearing is set for March 19, 2019, in New Bern.

Thompson’s case is also assigned to federal District Judge Louise Flanagan.
