DUNN – Senior Patience Ward and sophomore Alexus Mitchell combined for 10 fourth-quarter points as East Bladen’s Lady Eagles held off Midway to claim a 48-43 non-conference girls’ basketball victory Monday night.

Midway had trimmed a 10-point East Bladen halftime lead to 36-31 at the third quarter break, but Mitchell tossed in a pair of baskets, and Ward sank 4 free throws and a basket to keep the Lady Eagles on top.

Ward led the winners with 16 points. Mitchell finished with 13 points, sophomore Mya McDonald pumped in 11 points, and senior Lorna Mendell added 6 points.

McDonald, Mitchell, freshman AnnaGrey Heustess, Ward and Mendell dropped in first quarter baskets as East Bladen built a 13-9 lead. Ward sank 2 foul shots in the quarter, and McDonald hit one.

Mitchell drained a 3-point shot and another basket in the second period. McDonald popped in a basket and 2 free throws, and Ward buried a 3-point shot as the Lady Eagles stretched their lead to 25-15.

Mendell worked the paint for a pair of third quarter baskets, Ward canned a basket and a free throw, and McDonald and Mitchell connected for one basket each to keep East Bladen ahead 36-31.

Sophomore Kris-shyia McKoy sparked the Midway third quarter rally with a trio of baskets and finished with 13 points. Teammate Allison Belflowers bombed in a pair of second half 3-point shots and totaled 8 points.

Coach Patty Evers’ Lady Eagles improved to 3-0 on the season and will open Three Rivers Conference play Tuesday at Whiteville.
