BLADENBORO – Five different Fairmont players scored in double-figures as the Lady Tornadoes defeated West Bladen 84-45 Tuesday night in Southeastern Athletic Conference girls basketball action.
Sophomores Shaniah Smith and Taniya Simms tossed in 16 points each to lead Fairmont. Junior Myasia Simms followed with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Sophomore Shamiah Smith totaled 13 points, and senior Sydney Jacobs added 10.
Senior Rylee Chadwick rang up a game-high 21 points for West Bladen and also tallied 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Junior Brookee Singletary finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Freshman Natalee Sykes followed with 5 points, and senior Lainey Autry totaled 4 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Junior Kiera Lewis and sophomore Alina Chavez grabbed 3 rebounds each.
Taniya Simms powered in 5 baskets and Myasia Simms netted 3 more to spark the visitors to a 19-10 1st quarter lead. Chadwick, Singletary and Lewis drove for lay-ups for West. Chadwick made 2 free throws, and Autry pumped in a 12-footer from the corner.
The Smith sisters combined for 13 Fairmont points in the 2nd period with Shamiah scoring 7, and Shaniah adding 6 as the lead grew to 40-21 at halftime. Chadwick flipped in a runner and 2 free throws for West. Sykes pumped in a 6-footer and a free throw, Autry threw in a runner, and Singletary sank 2 free throws.
Shaniah Smith drained a pair of 3-point shots in the 3rd period, and Zariah Locklear added 2 baskets as the lead stretched to 58-31. Chadwick cashed in 4 free throws, Sykes, Chavez and Singletary netted lay-ups for West in the quarter.
Chadwick connected on 7 of 8 free throws for West Bladen in the final quarter and popped in a 4-footer. Freshman Kali Allen scored on a follow shot and a free throw, and Singletary turned a Chadwick assist into a lay-up.
West Bladen, now 1-2 in SAC-7 play and 8-4 overall, will travel to Red Springs Friday night. Fairmont improved to 3-1 in league play and 12-3 overall and will visit East Bladen Friday night.
