CHARLOTTE – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) is honored to announce Independence High School graduate Trey Shuford has received a prestigious appointment to the United States Air Force Academy.

Mr. Shuford is an Eagle Scout, served as the Independence Air Force JROTC Cadet Colonel, and received the Independence High School “Order of the Patriot” award for overall excellence.

“I saw my first aircraft at the age of six, while on a Cub Scout trip to the U.S.S. Yorktown and Fort Sumter,” explained Mr. Shuford.  “It was a Grumman F6F Hellcat – the U.S. Navy’s standard fighter during World War II.  I remember this so vividly because it had a ‘bad word’ in the name.  Nonetheless, I walked right up to it and rested my hand upon the side cowl ring.  It was at that moment I knew, I would fly for the United States Military.”

Mr. Shuford is the son of Alfred and Sherri Shuford.

“Trey has an impressive resumé, but even more impressive is his perseverance,” said Congressman Pittenger.  “He received a nomination from my office last year, but ultimately did not receive an appointment.  Undaunted, he attended an Air Force prep school and applied again this year.  He has displayed the character and tenacity America needs in our future leaders.”

Mr. Shuford is one of eleven local students to receive a United States Service Academy appointment for the 2017-2018 academic year.

On April 14th, Congressman Pittenger will host two events to help local students learn more about the U.S. Service Academies, admissions requirements, and the rigorous nomination process:
