Bladen County’s Kayla Thompson ventured south of the North Carolina border over the weekend to participate in the 2023 South Carolina Women’s Open.

Thompson shot 72-68-74=214 to tie for fifth place and earn $450. The tournament was held at the par-71, 6,191-yard Cobblestone Park Black Course in Blythewood, South Carolina.

The highlight for Thompson came in Sunday’s final round when she holed out for an eagle on the par-4, 312-yard 15th hole that allowed her to shoot 1-under 35 on the back nine.

Thompson began Sunday’s final round at 2-under and tied for second place, one stroke behind eventual winner Jean Reynolds of Newton, Georgia. However, Thompson bogeyed the first three holes Sunday and finished the front side at 4-over 39 to fall off the pace. She recovered on the back nine with a birdie at No. 10, the eagle at No. 15 and a pair of bogeys to move closer to the top.

Thompson’s best round came Saturday with a 3-under 68. She shot 3-under 33 on the front in spite of a double-bogey 7 on the par-5, 512-yard fifth hole and was in a three-way tie for the lead at one point. She birdied No. 3, No. 6, No. 7 and No. 8.

Thompson lives in Clarkton and graduated from West Bladen High School and UNC Wilmington.

Reynolds was the only player who shot under par in each of the three rounds and earned $2,000. She finished two shots ahead of Hannah Levi of Columbus, Mississippi.
