Spread the love

By Cheryl Thurston

Goodbye February and Hello March! I see that our temperatures are rising, and so are our “spirits”. We have plenty of reasons to expect good changes in our near future, and the weather seems to be with us. How would it be if Bladen County had a season without severe weather, flooding, or topsoil erosion. Is that the stuff of daydreams? Nope. It’s always possible.

Just take a gander at the list below. Things around here look good. As you may already know, the wonderful people who work at the Bladen County Health Department spend some of their time each month inspecting our local eateries, cafeterias, restaurants, kitchens, groceries, and schools to protect the public health and the public food supply. What would we do without them?

I don’t want to know the answer to that. We, citizens of the local community, depend on the professionals who serve these purposes to ensure that we can eat everyday without suffering from food poisoning or contamination, as we depend on our local providers. That includes a window at a fast-food restaurant as well as the kitchen at the sit-down place we like most, or even the daily menu at our kid’s school. Let’s not take our mechanisms for granted, or at least remember that these assurances are only granted to due diligence (which, in America, is mandated by law.)

America may not be perfect, (yet) but our institutions serve us well. We are grateful for the uniqueness of our American lifestyle which affords us the prerogative and privilege to choose what we will do, or eat. Please join me in a prayer for those who don’t share all the goodness which defines our nation. I wish they did. As always, gentle people, bon appetite!
