CARRBORO – Robert Kinlaw, producer of the UNC-TV documentary, White Lake – Remembering the Nation’s Safest Beach, has been awarded the Excellence in Filmmaking Award for the Best Short Film at the Carrboro Film Festival.

The festival, now in its 12th year, is the premiere film festival in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. It is a celebration of film as art, and accepts entries from around the world.

“Being selected for the festival was a great honor,” said Kinlaw, a native of White Lake. “I was incredibly humbled to receive the Excellence in Filmmaking
Award.”

According to a Film Festival representative, over 300 films were submitted for consideration. Of those, 40 were selected to advance to judging for five competition areas.

Kinlaw’s 9-minute film, Princess Warrior, is the true story of a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate and Army social worker stationed in Afghanistan to counsel soldiers with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). During her deployment, she developed PTSD.

The social worker, Amanda Paige, attended the festival. Kinlaw spoke of her, saying, “I am proud of A.P. (Amanda Paige) for having the courage to show her
most intimate moments in the documentary. It is wonderful for others to recognize how important her story is.”

Princess Warrior was also selected for the Tryon International Film Festival in October.
