ELIZABETHTOWN- Laila Smith and Iveonna Ward scored 14 points each to lead Elizabethtown to a 40-38 Waccamaw Middle School Conference victory over Whiteville Central Thursday.

Laila Smith and Zoe Smith sparked the Lady Cougars to a 10-6 first quarter lead with 2 baskets each. Ward also pumped in a basket in the period.

Ward threw in 3 baskets in the second period, and Laila Smith drained a 3-point shot and another basket as the Elizabethtown lead grew to 21-15 at halftime.

Zoe Smith tossed in 2 baskets in the third period, Ward added another basket, and Shabrea Geathers sank a free throw as Elizabethtown kept a 28-25 lead at the third quarter break.

Laila Smith rang up 2 baskets and a free throw in the final quarter, and Ward delivered a basket and 2 free throws. Zoe Smith nailed a 3-point shot to keep Elizabethtown on top.

Zoe Smith finished with 11 points for the winners. T. Smith led Central with 15 points, and E. Williams followed with 13 points.

Coach  Cedric Owens’ Lady Cougars improved to 2-1 in Waccamaw Division AA play and are 4-1 overall. Elizabethtown will travel to Williams Township Monday.
