ELIZABETHTOWN – Jolene Merritt fired in the deciding goal in the penalty kick shootout Wednesday to lift Clarkton School of Discovery to a Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls soccer victory over Nakina at Bladen County Park.

Nakina made their second kick of the shootout and held a 1-0 lead in the shootout round until Traveyuana Gaskins, the fourth Clarkton player to kick, blasted in her penalty kick to tie the shootout 1-1. Merritt then knocked in her game-winner, and Nakina missed their attempt.

After a scoreless first half in regulation play, Addie Bowen booted in the first goal of the game for the Lady Blue Devils. However Nakina converted a penalty kick 8 minutes later to tie the game 1-1. Regulation play ended with the score knotted 1-1.

Coach Jordan Raynor’s Lady Blue Devils improved to 7-1 and will play Acme-Delco Thursday at 5:15 at Bladen County Park.
