NCHSAA Class 2A Girls Basketball Play-offs
No. 31 West Bladen (15-10) at No. 2 Bertie (23-2)

West Bladen’s Lady Knights travel to Windsor Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game against the Bertie Lady Falcons in the opening round of the NCHSAA Class 2A Girls Basketball Play-offs.

Coach Brian McCleney’s Lady Knights finished fourth in the Three Rivers Conference with an 11-7 league record. After winning their first seven conference games, West Bladen dropped five games by nine points or less. During that streak they lost 3 of their top 7 players to injuries and for other reasons.

Junior guard Kasee Singletary, junior forward Mikayla Meadows and freshman guard Haley George have been stalwarts for the Lady Knights throughout the season. Junior Seniah Johnson has moved into the starting line-up and led the West Bladen scoring in both of their TRC tournament games.

Junior Jessica Labra and freshman Hannah Pait have also played keyed roles in the frontcourt for the Lady Knights, and junior guard Tatiana Hunt helps out in the backcourt.

Coach Kelvin Hayes’ Bertie Lady Falcons won the Northeastern Coastal regular-season and tournament championships and have outscored their opponents by an average 64-40 margin. Their two losses were to 4A power Winterville South Central and 19-7 Riverside.

Akyia King, a 5-6 senior, leads the Lady Falcon attack averaging 21 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals per game. Five-six junior Dawaunti Combs scores 15.7 points per game. Five-ten freshman Jessica Stokes averages 10 rebounds, 8 points and 3 steals per game.
