The flags were lowered to half-mast and the front entry of the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office is draped in black on Wednesday as they grieve the loss of a long-time employee and friend of many in the department. Broadus Fred Hester, 89, passed away on Monday, Nov. 9.

“The Bladen County Sheriff’s Department is in mourning,” said Major Larry Guyton.
During his law enforcement career, he worked for the Bladenboro Police Department before joining the Bladen County Sheriff’s Department in 1951 where he worked until his retirement in 1991.
He is survived by his son, Broadus Hester Jr. of Bladenboro; brothers, Kendrick Hester of Bladenboro and Ernest Hester and wife Ettaree of Bladenboro; and sister, Hilda Coleman and husband Vollie of Bladenboro; and sister-in-law, Vonda Hester.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Galeed Baptist Church in Bladenboro. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Jason Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Galeed Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shoebox Ministry at Galeed Baptist Church, 571 Galeed Church Road, Bladenboro NC 28320.
