On March 9th, 1989, the Bladen County Bulldogs defeated Midway 64-59 in the semi-final of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Sectional 3 Basketball tournament, hosted in Bladenboro.

The Bulldogs reportedly had a bad start and had early trouble with fouls. The Junior center, Trelonnie Owens, picked two early fouls and had left the game with two minutes left in the first quarter. Midway was able to take advantage of Bladenboro’s mistakes and shot 78% from the charity line. Bladenboro was able to lead 29-20 at halftime.

Fourteen of Midway’s 20 points had come from shots at the free-throw line. Midway came within 3 points, but that’s the closest they’d be able to get for the game. Owens had led Bladenboro with 19 points while Curtis McKoy added 15 with 11 rebounds.
