1845 – Ether first used in childbirth in the United States in Jefferson, Georgia.

1903 – “Sweet Adeline”, a barbershop quartet favorite, with lyrics by Richard Husch Gerard and music by Harry Armstrong, is first sung.

1915 – US Iron and Steel workers begin a 3-week strike in Ohio for an eight-hour-day. They are successful as the United States needs steel for armaments.

1926 – Depot Square in Bronx renamed Botanical Square.

1927 – Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s landmark musical “Show Boat”, based on Edna Ferber’s novel, opens at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City. It runs for 572 performances.

1932 – Radio City Music Hall, designed by Edward Durell Stone and Donald Deskey, opens at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, New York City.

1939 – First American Skimobile in North Conway, New Hampshire.

1943 – Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery discusses Operation Overlord (D-day landings) with Allied Supreme Commander General Dwight Eisenhower and Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Bedell Smith.

1953 – National Football League Championship, Briggs Stadium, Detroit: Detroit Lions beat Cleveland Browns 17-16 to retain title.

1962 – 28th Heisman Trophy Award: Terry Baker, Oregon State quarterback.

1968 – Apollo 8 returns to Earth.

1970 – Jerry Herman’s musical “Hello Dolly”, starring Carol Channing, closes at the St. James Theatre in New York City after 2,844 performances and 10 Tony Awards wins.

1979 – Soap Opera “Knots Landing” premieres on CBS-TV.

1981 – Edmonton Oilers’ Wayne Gretzky becomes fastest National Hockey League player to get 100 points in a season in his 38th game. He scored 4 goals and had an assist in 10-3 win over visiting Los Angeles Kings.

1987 – Steve Largent sets all-time National Football League record for career catches when he catches his 752nd pass.

1993 – Dow Jones hits record 3792.93.

2001 – The People’s Republic of China is granted permanent normal trade relations with the United States.

2008 – Israel launches Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip, beginning with an airstrike that hits 100 targets in 220 seconds killing around 250 people.

2012 – NASA unveils plans to capture 500 ton asteroid in 2025.
