1813 – British burn Buffalo, New York during War of 1812.

1890 – US 7th Cavalry massacred 200+ captive Sioux at Wounded Knee, South Dakota.

1908 – Patent granted for a 4-wheel automobile brake developed in Clintonville, Wisconsin.

1913 – First movie serial “Adventures of Kathlyn” premieres in Chicago.

1930 – Fred P. Newton completes longest swim recorded of 1,826 miles when he swam in the Mississippi River from Ford Dam, Minnesota, to New Orleans.

1934 – First collegiate basketball doubleheader is played at Madison Square Garden in New York City: New York University beats Notre Dame 25-18 and Westminster edges St. John 37-33.

1948 – US State Department announces work on placing objects into Earth orbit.

1952 – First transistorized hearing aid offered for sale in Elmsford, New York.

1958 – TV soap opera “Young Dr. Malone” debuts.

1963 – National Football League Championship, Wrigley Field, Chicago: Chicago Bears beat New York Giants 14-10. It’s the Giants’ third consecutive championship defeat. The game was played in temperatures under 10 degrees.

1965 – The Supremes release single “My World is Empty Without You.”

1972 – Life magazine ceased publication.

1975 – 11 killed, 75 hurt by terrorist bomb at LaGuardia Airport in New York City.

1982 – College football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant ends his career with University of Alabama. He won 323 wins during his career which included stops at Maryland (1945), Kentucky (1946-53), Texas A&M (1954-57) and Alabama (1958-82).

1989 – Jane Pauley says goodbye to NBC’s “Today” show.

1997 – Hong Kong begins slaughtering all its chickens to prevent bird flu.

2007 – Tom Brady sets National Football League record, throwing his 50th touchdown pass, and the New England Patriots become the first team in NFL history to finish the regular season 16-0.

2015 – Ebola epidemic in Guinea declared over by World Health Organization. 2,500 died over two years.

2016 – President Barack Obama retaliates against Russia for hacking American computer systems and trying to influence the 2016 presidential election by ejecting 35 Russian spies and imposing sanctions.

2018 – 85th Orange Bowl: #1 Alabama beats #4 Oklahoma 45-34.
