1900 – The United States and the United Kingdom sign a treaty for the Panama Canal.

1901 – Pierpont Morgan forms US Steel Corp.

1918 – Stephen W. Thompson is the first US pilot to down an enemy airplane.

1921 – New York Yankees purchase 20 acres in Bronx for Yankee Stadium.

1936 – Harry Ferguson patents the suction side hydraulic control system, allowing control of three-point hitch mounted agricultural implements attached to tractors.

1940 – Glenn Miller and his Orchestra record “Tuxedo Junction.”

1945 – US troops under General Douglas MacArthur enter Manila in the Philippines after a month-long battle, ending three years of Japanese military occupation.

1953 – “Peter Pan”, animated film by Walt Disney, opens at Roxy Theater in New York City.

1967 – “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” variety show premieres on CBS-TV.

1972 – Airlines in the United States begin mandatory inspection of passengers and baggage.

1978 – Blizzard forms in the Northeast, killing 100 people in New England and New York over three days.

1981 – Military jury in North Carolina convicts Robert Garwood of collaborating with the enemy during the Vietnam War.

1989 – Kareem Abdul-Jabar becomes the first NBA player to score 38,000 points.

1994 – Medger Evers murderer Byron de la Beckwith sentenced to life in prison in Jackson, Mississippi, 30 years after the crime.

1998 – Author Tom Clancy confirms he signed an agreement to purchase the Minnesota Vikings for slightly more than $200 million, an NFL franchise record.

2008 – A major tornado outbreak across the southern United States leaves at least 58 dead. It’s the most since the May 31, 1985 outbreak that killed 88.

2016 – Computer hackers try to steal $1 billion from Federal Reserve Bank of New York, using Bangladesh banking codes. The hackers steal $81 million before a typo alerts authorities.

2018 – Dow Jones Industrial Average has the largest intraday point swing, dropping over 1,413 points.

2023 – NFL Pro Bowl Games, Las Vegas, Nevada: NFL beats AFC 35-33 in new format which includes a skills competitions and non-contact 7-on-7 flag football games rather than actual tackle football game.
