1894 – Martha Hughes Cannon takes office as the first woman state senator in the United States, in Utah, after defeating her own husband.

1913 – First Sedan-type car (Hudson) goes on display at 13th Auto Show in New York City.

1922 – Insulin first used on humans to treat diabetes. Frederick Banting injects fellow Canadian Leonard Thompson, age 14.

1935 – Amelia Earhart flies from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California. It was non-stop, of course.

1943 – United States and Britain relinquish extraterritorial rights to China.

1957 – Plane mass murderer Jack Gilbert Graham is executed via the gas chamber.

1959 – 9th NFL Pro Bowl, LA Memorial Coliseum: Eastern Conference beats Western Conference 28-21. Most Valuable Players were Frank Gifford, New York Giants halfback and Doug Atkins, Chicago Bears defensive end.

1963 – San Francisco Warriors center Wilt Chamberlain scored 67 points in a 134-129 defeat against the Los Angeles at the Cow Palace.

1964 – First government report by US Surgeon General Luther Terry warning that smoking may be hazardous.

1991 – Congress empowers President George W. Bush to order an attack on Iraq.

1996 – Space Shuttle STS 72 (Endeavour 10) launches into space.

2002 – 7th Critics’ Choice Movie Awards: A Beautiful Mind wins Best Film.

2009 – 66th Golden Globes: Slumdog Millionaire, Mickey Rourke, Kate Winslet win.

2021 – College Football, National Championship, Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida: #1 Alabama beats #3 Ohio State 52-24.

2021 – US House Democrats introduce one article of impeachment against President Donald Trump for “incitement of insurrection” for encouraging his supporters to riot at the Capital.
