1912 – A state record minus-40 degrees in Oakland, Maryland.

1920 – New York Times editorial (falsely) reports rockets can never fly.

1922 – WHA-AM in Madison, Wisconsin begins radio transmissions.

1927 – United States and Mexico battle over oil interests.

1928 – Swedish-American inventor E.F.W. Alexanderson of General Electric demonstrates the first television receiver at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady, New York.

1930 – “Mickey Mouse” comic strip first appears.

1942 – Henry Ford patents a method of constructing plastic auto bodies.

1943 – Adolf Hitler declares “Total War” against the Allies.

1948 – First country music TV show, “Midwestern Hayride”, premieres on WLW-TV in Cincinnati, Ohio.

1957 – 7th NFL Pro Bowl, LA Memorial Coliseum: Western Conference beats Eastern Conference 19-10. Most Valuable Players were Baltimore Colts kicker Bert Reichichar and Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Ernie Stautner.

1962 – Chubby Checker’s song “The Twist”, credited with starting the Twist dance craze, goes to #1 on the charts two years after first reaching number one spot.

1965 – 15th NBA All-Star Game, St. Louis Arena, St. Louis, Mo: East beats West 124-123. Cincinnati Royals forward Jerry Lucas named Most Valuable Player.

1968 – Johnny Cash performs for inmates at Folsom State Prison in Folsom, California. The show is recorded for live action release.

1975 – US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger hints at military action against oil countries in case of “actual strangulation of the industrialized world” in the wake of oil shock.

1979 – Charlie Daniels hosts Volunteer Jam.

1985 – John McEnroe repeats previous year’s result with a 7-5, 6-0, 6-4 win over Ivan Lendl to claim back-to-back season-ending ATP Masters Grand Prix tennis titles at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

1991 – 12th ACE Cable Awards: Weather Channel wins the Golden Cable-ACE for the coverage of Hurricane Hugo.

1999 – Basketball superstar Michael Jordan announces his second retirement just prior to the start of lockout-shortened 1998-99 season. He returns in 2001 with Washington.

2008 – 65th Golden Globes: Atonement, Daniel Day-Lewis and Julie Christie win.

2016 – Record Powerball lottery held in America – $1.6 billion. There were three winning tickets.

2023 – China reports 60,000 COVID-19 related deaths in just over a month while another report estimates 800 million people have been infected, 64% of the country’s population.
