1870 – 15th Amendment to the US constitution was adopted, guaranteeing the right to vote regardless of race.

1910 – Mississippi legislature founded The University of Southern Mississippi.

1922 – WWL-AM in New Orleans begins radio transmissions.

1944 – 781 British bombers attack Nuremberg, Germany.

1947 – LPGA Titleholders Championship Women’s Golf: Babe Didrikson Zaharias wins her first of three Titleholders titles by 5 strokes ahead of Dorothy Kirby.

1952 – 6th Tony Awards: “The Fourposter” (play) and “The King & I” (musical) win.

1955 – 27th Academy Awards: “On the Waterfront”, Marlon Brando and Grace Kelly win.

1961 – NASA civilian pilot Joseph A. Walker takes X-15 on a test flight to an altitude of 169,660 feet.

1965 – Vietnam War: A car bomb explodes in front of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, killing 23 and wounding 183 others.

1972 – North Vietnam launches a major conventional offensive against South Vietnam.

1981 – “Chariots of Fire”, directed by Hugh Hudson and starring Ben Cross and Ian Charleson, premieres at a Royal Command Film Performance. The movie wins Best Picture in 1982.

1981 – President Ronald Reagan is shot and wounded in an assassination attempt by John Hinckley. Three others are also wounded.

1984 – World’s most valuable tip: New York police detective Robert Cunningham offers waitress Phyllis Penzo half of a $1 lottery ticket. Next day they win $6 million.

1990 – Jack Nicklaus makes his debut on the Senior PGA tour with a 71 (-1) in the first round of the Tradition at Desert Mountain. He wins the event by 4 strokes over Gary Player.

2000 – Richard Branson is knighted by Charles, Prince of Wales, for “services to entrepreneurship” at Buckingham Palace, London.

2001 – At 15 years, 9 months American swimmer Michael Phelps breaks 200-meter butterfly world record at the US World Championship trials at Austin, Texas. He becomes the youngest male to set a world mark.

2012 – Mega Millions lottery hits a world record jackpot of $640 million dollars.

2017 – North Carolina repeals its controversial bathroom law that restricted transgender use.

2023 – Former President Donald Trump is indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on charges over hush payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels. He is the first president to face criminal charges.
