The Mount Olive University men’s golf team needed a course Friday to hold a pre-tournament qualifier. Tropical Storm Idalia had made three courses near the school unplayable.

That’s when the management of Vineyard Golf at White Lake stepped in.

The Trojans, led by Elizabethtown native Cade Hancock, teed it up Friday on the Bladen County layout located between Elizabethtown and White Lake. The team was able able to play their qualifying event and Hancock was able to show off his home course.

Mount Olive is scheduled to open its season Tuesday in the two-day Glade Springs Invitation in Daniels, West Virginia.

In a letter received by Vineyard general manager Amy Bailey, the team wrote, “Just having the ability to get to play another round before heading off to play in West Virginia was a plus in getting them prepared for their first tournament of the season … Thanks again to Vineyard Golf at White Lake. Go Trojans!”

Hancock, a graduate student, had a 74.08 scoring average in eight tournaments last academic year for Mount Olive. He tied for fifth in the Conference Carolinas championship tournament in April.
