Wells Fargo & Co. has a bank branch in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. A note on the doors states, “This branch is temporarily closed.” However, no explanation is given as to why the bank is closed on the note at the bank. Visitors are directed to www.wellsfargo.com/locator for more information.

A Bladen Online staff member called the local branch number on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. The prerecorded message did not say the bank was closed, but no representative could be reached by phone. Then the BladenOnline staff member reached out to the Board of Directors via email asking if the bank was closed, how long the bank would be closed and if the bank was going through an audit.

Mr. Josh Dunn with Wells Fargo & Company Corporate Communications replied to our email on Thursday morning stating, “Wells Fargo has temporarily closed our Elizabethtown branch, located at 202 West Broad Street, after an employee who works in the branch tested positive for COVID-19.”

He continued in his statement, “The employee’s health is being closely monitored by their doctor, and we wish our colleague a full and speedy recovery and will provide our full support.”

“Wells Fargo quickly activated its protocols for this situation, deep cleaned the branch, and is following all public health guidance. All employees based in the branch who were in prolonged, close contact with the affected individual have been asked not to come into the branch in accordance with public health guidance. The branch will resume operations as soon as possible.” Mr. Dunn added.

In the email on Thursday, Mr. Dunn closed stating, “In all open branches, we have in place measures to ensure we can serve our customers and keep our branches safe, including utilizing drive ups, offering some services by appointment only, using protective barriers, enacting social distancing measures, requiring customers and employees to wear face coverings, and performing enhanced cleaning. Customers can check Wells Fargo’s branch locator for ATM locations and the status of branches and can use mobile and online banking tools almost anywhere 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Then Mr. Dunn replied again on Friday morning, “We plan to reopen our Elizabethtown branch on Monday, April 26. Please note that due to COVID-19 protocols, the drive-thru lanes will be open, and customers will be able to meet with bankers by appointment only.”

Mr. Dunn also stated, there is no other reason for the local branch being closed.

In 2017, Tim Sloan, Wells Fargo & Co CEO at the time, confirmed his company plans to rethink retail and shutter 450 branches by the end of 2018.

“The branch interactions are reflective of what’s going on in terms of customer choice moving more to mobile than anything else,” Sloan said. “When you think about our customer interactions… look [not only] at branch interactions, but also look at the number of online and mobile interactions.”

Business Journal published a report by Jeff Blumenthal yesterday, April 20, 2021, announcing the Wells Fargo & Co. “filed to shutter 138 locations so far this year, keeping it on pace for its planned reduction of 250 locations in 2021.”

The local Wells Fargo bank is located at 202 W. Broad Street in Elizabethtown, NC. BladenOnline will publish more information as soon as it is made available.
