Former West Bladen stars Tyre Boykin and John Bowen saw playing time this week at the Division I level as their respective college basketball teams tapped off their seasons.

Boykin

Boykin, a 6-1 freshman, scored 8 points, dished out 2 assists and snared 2 rebounds in 23 minutes as his Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos opened their season with a 105-35 win over Culver-Stockton College.

The Tar Heel native was credited with a rebound, a blocked shot and a steal in only 3 minutes of playing time as the Kangaroos pounded Greenville, IL University 138-97. Boykin did not play in UMKC’s 71-66 loss to Southeast Missouri State Saturday.

The Kangaroos will travel to Kansas State Monday night.

Bowen

Bowen, a 6-7 senior, started for UNC-Wilmington in the Seahawks opening loss to Western Carolina and collected 2 rebounds and 2 steals in 11 minutes. Bowen did not play in UNC-W’s 76-68 win over UNC-Asheville.

The Bladenboro native dropped in a pair of 2nd half lay-ups for 4 points and contributed 2 rebounds and a steal in 13 minutes as the Seahawks claimed the championship of the Mako Medical Asheville Classic with a 73-50 victory over Troy Saturday.

The Seahawks will return to action at East Carolina on Monday, December 7th.
