According to the National Weather Service office in Wilmington winter precipitation is likely this weekend. Reid Hawkins with the National Weather Service, said cold air will start moving into our area Friday night.

A low pressure area is expected to move into the area tonight and  provide lift for precipitation to develop late Saturday night and continue into Sunday over southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina. “With cold air aloft there is a threat of a rain mixed with snow over the northern portions of the Pee Dee and areas of southeast North Carolina,” said Hawkins.

Hawkins said there is a good chance rain and snow will enter the forecast area after 12 midnight Sunday and move across the area throughout Sunday. The precipitation is expected to begin as rain mixed with snow with accumulations less than an inch mainly north of a Hartsville, SC to Whiteville, NC to Burgaw, NC line. Areas north of a
this line are expected to see accumulation under an inch. To the south rain will be mixed with some snow but little or no accumulation is expected. If an winter weather advisory is needed it would most likely be issued tonight or early Saturday morning, according to Hawkins.

On Sunday, highs are expected to reach into the upper 30s to upper 40s across the region but wind chills are expected to be in the mid 20s to upper 30s.
