CHARLOTTE – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) is honored to announce Marvin Ridge High School graduate Nathan Utesch has received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Mr. Utesch received the 2016 North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s “Heart of a Champion” award, volunteered to serve the disabled at the Joy Prom, and was a four-year varsity letterman for the Marvin Ridge swim and dive team.

“I am an American,” said Mr. Utesch.  “I believe in the freedom for which our country stands.  As much as I believe that freedom is a necessary human right, I know that it must be fought for and defended in this world.  The United States military supports this value by battling tyranny and liberating people living under oppression.  When I think of America’s influence on the rest of the world, I know that I want to give back to my country and I want to do so in the form of a military career.”

He is the son of Scott and Angela Utesch.

“How motivated is Nathan to serve our country?  He’s already attending Virginia Tech on a full scholarship but is anxious to give that up and start over so that he can attend the United States Naval Academy.  We are blessed by outstanding young men and women like Nate who are committed to defending our values and way of life,” said Congressman Pittenger.

Mr. Utesch is one of ten local students to receive a United States Service Academy appointment for the 2017-2018 academic year.

On April 14th, Congressman Pittenger will host two events to help local students learn more about the U.S. Service Academies, admissions requirements, and the rigorous nomination process:
