West Bladen High School LogoWest Bladen’s Knights travel to Cerro Gordo tonight to battle the West Columbus Vikings in a key non-conference football game for both teams.

Coach Russell Dove’s Knights will look to build on last week’s 46-0 romp past South Robeson, while West Columbus looks to bounce back from a last-minute 43-42 loss to South Brunswick.

The Knights have won their last three games against West Columbus and have also won 6 of the last 7 meetings between the two teams. A year ago, Malique McDowell rushed for 172 yards as West Bladen rolled to a 51-8 halftime lead en route to a 57-22 victory.

McDowell led the Knight rushing attack against South Robeson with 111 yards and a touchdown. Six different West Bladen players scored touchdowns, including De’quan Lennon who ran for 84 yards and James Moore who gained 56 yards.

Quarterback Stefon McDonald ran for 2 touchdowns and threw for 42 yards and a touchdown.

The West Bladen defense held South Robeson to only 47 yards of total offense.

West Columbus led by two touchdowns in the first half and still had a 42-35 lead over South Brunswick when the Cougars scored a touchdown and a 2-point conversion in the final minute to pull out the win.

Senior quarterback Johnny McFadden who threw for 1,211 yards leads the Viking spread offense. McFadden has a trio of fleet-footed ball-carriers behind him led by senior Frederick Evans who rushed for 1,105 yards last year.

Tight end Tommy Bryant who had 26 receptions for almost 300 yards last year is McFadden’s favorite target.
