Clarkton School of Discovery defeated visiting Bladenboro Middle in three straight sets Tuesday 25-6, 25-18 and 15-12.
In the first set, Gracyn Martin scored on her first serve giving Clarkton a lead they would keep throughout. Lily Lin’s two service points extended the lead to 4-1. Alyssa Futrell reeled off 5 straight service points including one ace as the Lady Blue Devils pulled out to an 11-4 advantage. Khadija Jones ended the set with thirteen consecutive service points including back-to-back aces, giving CSD a 25-6 win.
In the second set, Jones ended a 3-0 run by the Bulldogs with a great return point. Martin tied the score at 3 with her two service points, and Jones quickly ended Bladenboro‘s serve by smashing another return.
Adrienne Howell stretched the Clarkton lead to 10-4 with 6 straight service points that included 2 aces. Cybil Campbell knocked in three service points with one ace to extend the Lady Blue Devil lead to 14-5. Jones once again cut Bladenboro’s service short with a stunning return.
Ruth Ward pushed the Clarkton lead to 20-6 with 5 straight service points. Martin’s return point stopped Bladenboro after just 1 service point, and Jones tallied 2 service points with one ace to give CSD a 23-8 advantage. The Lady Bulldogs then ran off 9 service points in a row before Abbie Cross hit a return point and a service point to give the Lady Blue Devils a 25-18 victory.
In the third set, Bladenboro took an early 1-0 lead before Campbell scored on a return and Lauren Bowen delivered two service points. Bladenboro retook the lead at 4-3 but a side-out led to two service points by Ashley Hunsinger, and a 6-4 Lady Devil lead.
Martin denied Bladenboro the service point, and Sara Gargala scored 7 service points, including one ace for the Lady Devils. With the score 14-5, Bladenboro made a run scoring 6 service points with one ace before Gargala hit a return to end the set and match giving the Lady Blue Devils a 15-12 victory.
