ELIZABETHTOWN — Jayden Lewis, Brandon McKinley and John High keyed a 12-0 Elizabethtown 2nd quarter spurt that propelled the Cougars to a 28-19 Waccamaw Middle School Conference victory over Clarkton School of Discovery Thursday night.
Tykee Hill worked the paint for a pair of baskets, and Lewis flipped in another as the Cougars built an early 6-4 lead. ShyRon Thompson answered with a basket and a free throw for the Blue Devils, and Omar Powell added a free throw.
Lewis, McKinley and High tossed in 2 baskets each during the 12-0 run that carried Elizabethtown to an 18-4 halftime lead.
Powell bombed in a 3-point shot, and Thompson pumped in a basket for CSD in the 3rd quarter. However Fox Sutton nailed a 3-point shot and Hill popped in another basket to keep the Cougars on top 23-9.
Julian McLaney buried a 3-point shot, and Collin Adams netted a basket for the Cougars in the final period. Powell and Thompson hurled in 2 baskets each for the Blue Devils, and Noah White connected for a Clarkton basket.
Lewis and Hill led the balanced Cougar scoring with 6 points each. McKinley and High tallied 4 points each. Thompson topped all scorers with 9 points for Clarkton. Powell was right behind him with 8 points.
Coach Darius Gillispie’s Cougars improved to 2-1 and will travel to Whiteville Central Tuesday. Clarkton, now 0-4, will visit West Columbus Thursday.
