CERRO GORDO — Cedrick McKiver scored the game-winning basket in overtime Thursday night as Tar Heel edged West Columbus 35-33 in Waccamaw Middle School Conference boys’ basketball action.
McKiver led the Panther scoring with 12 points, and teammate Carnell Lewis fired in 10 points. Demarious Guions tossed in 6 points, and Levi Velasco-Garcia tallied 5 points for the winners.
D. Bellamy topped all scorers with 16 points for the Warriors, and C. McLeod followed with 9 points.
McKiver sparked the Panthers to an early 9-3 lead with a pair of baskets. Lewis buried a 3-point shot, and Guions dropped in a basket.
McKiver sank a basket and a free throw for Tar Heel in the 2nd period. Lewis and Velasco-Garcia popped in a basket each, and Guions cashed in 2 free throws. However Bellamy poured in 8 points in the quarter to tie the game 18-18 at halftime.
The Warriors edged ahead 24-23 in the 3rd quarter, but McKiver flipped in a basket and a free throw, and Lewis netted a basket to keep Tar Heel close.
Lewis bombed in a 3-ball, Velasco-Garcia hurled in a basket and a free throw, Jarvis McMillan put in a basket, and Guions made 2 free throws as the Panthers fought back and sent the game to overtime tied 33-33.
Coach Ken Cross’ Panthers remained unbeaten at 3-0 and will visit Williams Township Tuesday.
