In his final game at Campbell University, West Bladen grad D. J. Mason poured in 19 points Thursday night, but his Camels were eliminated from the Big South Conference Tournament 79-69 by Gardner-Webb.
Mason connected on 8 of 15 shots from the field, nailed his only 3-point shot and sank both of his free throw attempts. The Clarkton native grabbed 3 rebounds and dished out 2 assists.
The 6-6 senior popped in a pair of first-half jump shots, but the Camels trailed 34-22 at halftime.
Mason worked free for a pair of lay-ups that pulled Campbell to within 39-33 with 15:41 left to play. Midway the half Mason dropped in 3 straight lay-ups then made 2 free throws to slice the Bulldog lead to 53-51 with 7:29 remaining.
The Camels tied the game at 53 and 55, but Gardner-Webb answered with a 24-11 run, before Mason bombed in a 3-point shot for the final Campbell points of the season.
Mason finished with a 10.7 scoring average that was third highest on the team. He also led the team on the boards averaging 6.3 per game.
