Junior Alex Coates pitched a perfect game Monday night to lead East Bladen to a 2-0 Four County Conference baseball victory at Wallace-Rose Hill.

Coates struck out 6 and needed only 71 pitches to retire all 21 batters. “It was all kind of routine plays, and we made them,” said East Bladen Assistant Coach Robby Priest. “We played good defense.”

The Eagles staked Coates to an early lead with a first-inning run. Sophmore Kyle Tatum slammed a 2-out double, and senior Matthew Massengill knocked him in with a double.

Freshman Sincere Smith smacked a single to begin the Eagle third inning. Smith stole second base and went to third as senior Colby Hester reached base on a passed third strike.

With Hester running and the Bulldog secondbaseman covering, Tatum’s ground ball up the middle was turned into a double play that scored Smith with the second East Bladen run.

Tatum belted a single, a double and scored a run. Smith connected for 2 hits and scored a run. Massengill hammered the run-scoring double. Freshman Ty Watkins added a second-inning single to the Eagles 6-hit attack.

Coach Russell Priest’s Eagles improve to 2-4 in the conference and 6-8 overall. East Bladen will host Union Thursday.
