This month is Autism Awareness Month. One of the purposes of April is to raise awareness about this condition. Moreover, this cause aims to promote safe spaces and opportunities for those with autism spectrum disorders. Knowing more about this disorder can help to understand the position of many people around the world.

Autism is a disorder related to brain development. This condition impacts the perception and socialization of a person with others. As a result of this, problems in social interaction can be generated. Autism can cause difficulties in learning, communication, and behavior in many cases.

Autism is also called autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

According to the Autism Society website, “In 1972, the Autism Society launched the first annual National Autistic Children’s week, which evolved into Autism Acceptance Month (AAM). This April, we continue our efforts to spread awareness, promote acceptance, and ignite change.”

The causes of this disorder are often unknown. However, studies consider that one of the leading causes of Autism is changes or mutations in the genes. On the other hand, more possible reasons have been postulated, such as drug abuse during pregnancy and complications during childbirth.

According to the organization, Autism Speaks, “The ways in which people with autism learn, think and solve problems can range from high functioning people to people with severe difficulties. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily life, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live completely independently.”

Stigma and discrimination are the main obstacles to the diagnosis and treatment of a person with ASD. The support and acceptance of this neurological variation allow those affected by ASD to participate and enjoy a better environment.

This month is an invitation to reflect, spread awareness, promote acceptance, and drive change. One of the ways to do it is to wear something blue in April. According to the Autism Speakers website, this activity supports the understanding and acceptance of people with Autism.
