BLADENBORO — Junior Allister Russ knocked in sophomore Hunter Hester with the go-ahead run in the 5th inning, and West Bladen went on to defeat Lumberton 5-2 in non-conference baseball action Thursday night.
Coach Wade Pait’s Knights improved to 3-5 and will open Southeastern Athletic Conference play Tuesday night when they host Clinton. Lumberton, now 6-3, will visit Purnell Swett Tuesday night.
With scored tied 2-2, freshman Ashton Davis reached base on an error but was forced at 2nd by Hunter Hester. Junior Cade Allen laced a single to center field, and Allister Russ belted a single to center that plated Hester with the go-ahead run.
Knight sophomore Josh Dawson drew a lead-off walk to begin the 6th. Two outs later Davis walloped a triple to center field that scored Mason Jones, the courtesy runner for Dawson. An error on the end of the play scored Davis for a 5-2 Knight lead.
West juniors Garrett Dunham and Brady Durden teamed up to pitch a 6-hitter. Dunham struck out 4 batters in 3 innings, and allowed a run on 3 hits and 2 walks. Durden worked 4 innings of relief and gave up a run on 3 hits and 1 walk to pick up the win.
Allister Russ finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a run batted in to lead the Knight hitters. Davis slammed the RBI triple and scored a run. Hunter Hester doubled and scored 2 runs. Senior Jahmar Richardson, Allen, and Dunham added 1 hit each. Allen scored a run, and Richardson drove in a run.
Senior Caleb Maynor batted 2-for-4 and scored a run to lead the Pirate hitters. Senior Tashaun Stocks singled and drove in both runs for Lumberton. Senior Chatler Maynor singled and scored a run.
Senior Damian Robeson started and pitched 4 innings for the Pirates allowing 2 unearned runs on 4 hits and 3 walks. Stocks worked 1 inning of relief and gave up an unearned run on 2 hits while striking out 1. Junior Shaun Henderson worked 1 inning in relief and allowed 2 runs – 1 earned – on a hit and a walk while striking out 2.
