BLADENBORO –Junior Garrett Dunham pitched a complete game 8-hitter as West Bladen’s Knights defeated 1st place Midway 6-1 Monday night in Southeastern Athletic Conference baseball action. It was the Knights’ 1st win over Midway since both teams were placed in the SAC for the 2021-22 season.
Coach Wade Pait’s Knights evened their SAC record at 2-2 and improved to 6-9 overall. The Knights will host St. Pauls’ Tuesday night. Midway drops to 3-1 in the league and 11-5 overall, and will visit Clinton Tuesday night.
Dunham struck out 4, walked none and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits and an error in the 7th inning. Midway freshman Tanner Williams cracked a 1-out single, advanced on an error and Wyatt Richards’ single then scored on sophomore Luke Peterson’s single to spoil the shutout.
Junior Aiden Russ drew a 2-out walk in the West 3rd inning, and Dunham smacked a single to right field. Freshman Ashton Davis lined a single to center field that scored Russ, and junior Cade Allen knocked in Dunham with a single to right to put the Knights up 2-0.
Aiden Russ smashed a double to center field to start the West 5th inning. Dunham smoked a single to center field, and Davis walked. Senior Jordan Hester yanked a single to right that scored Aiden Russ. Dunham raced home on a passed ball. Junior Allister Russ poled a sacrifice fly to left that brought home Davis. Keon Whittington, the pinch-runner for Jordan Hester, darted home on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Dunham batted 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored to lead the Knight hitters. Aiden Russ slammed a double and scored twice. Davis, Allen and Jordan Hester connected for a single each. Davis and Whittington scored 1 run each. Davis, Allen, Jordan Hester and Allister Russ drove in 1 run each.
Peterson batted 2-for-3 with a run batted in to lead the Midway hitters. Williams pitched 5 innings and allowed 6 runs – 5 earned – on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 8. Junior Wyatt Herring worked a 1-2-3 6th inning in relief.
