ELIZABETHTOWN – Ty Lawson struck out 11 in six innings and the Whiteville offense collected 13 hits Tuesday night in an 8-2 non-conference baseball victory against East Bladen, giving the Eagles their first loss of the season.

East Bladen (6-1) is scheduled to play at Whiteville (3-3) on Friday before returning to Southeastern Athletic Conference play next week against Fairmont. The Eagles won their first two league games against West Bladen.

Whiteville catcher Bud Baldwin went 4-for-5, drove home two runs and scored twice to lead the Wolfpack at the plate. Lawson, Luke Odham and Caleb Johnson each had two hits and drove in two runs.

East Bladen leadoff batter Tyler Johnson went 3-for-4 and drove home both runs. Coleman Tatum and Jamar Lewis each went 2-for-3.

Evan Pait pitched six innings for East Bladen. The junior right-hander allowed five runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Raymond Autry pitched the final inning and gave up three runs on three hits with two walks.

Lawson struck out two batters in each of the first five innings. He scattered five hits, walked one and allowed one run over six innings. Ashton Hammonds pitched the final inning for Whiteville and allowed a run on two hits with two strikeouts.

Odham’s two-run single capped Whiteville’s three-run third inning. The Wolfpack added two more runs in the fourth on back-to-back run-scoring singles by Baldwin and Lawson that made it 5-0.

East Bladen got on the board in the fifth. Pait walked to open the inning. Marlan Davis drew a two-out walk. Courtesy runner Ahmad Powell stole third that put runners on the corners. Tyler Johnson then singled that plated Powell.

Whiteville added three runs in the top of the seventh that made it 8-1, using a two-run single by Johnson and a RBI single by Baldwin.

The Eagles scored their other run in the bottom of the seventh. Tatum ripped a double to left-center and scored on Tyler Johnson’s two-out single to center.
