The Bladen County Animal Shelter announced on Tuesday, May 9, the local shelter will be temporarily closed. According to Marianne Valentiner with the Bladen County Health Department the Bladen County Animal Shelter will be closed until May 17, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.

The reason for the temporary closure, Valentiner gave, is due to several animal illnesses in the shelter.  The county representative used the term Parvo.

Shelter Manager Karen Suggs confirmed Tuesday afternoon two adult dogs have died as a result of Parvo Virus. “We had four adult dogs in the shelter who came from the same residence and they were here at the shelter for five days. They were released to a rescue and they came down with Parvo the next day and that is when we started watching the other animals,” said Suggs.

She said the dog in the pen beside the original four dogs came down with the disease first and had to be euthanized and a second dog died Tuesday morning. Shelter employees are in the process of sanitizing the shelter. Suggs said all of the remaining animals will receive Parvo booster shots beginning Tuesday afternoon.

Valentiner said, “We Apologize For This Inconvenience!  We will be giving booster shots to the animals currently here and sanitizing the entire shelter.  This will ensure all animals are healthy again!”

“We must be closed for this time period to monitor the animals and ensure the animals are free of symptoms.  We will not take in any dogs or let any dogs go out except to rescue or for emergency calls during this time.” Valentiner explained.
