UPDATE: Bladen County Chief Deputy Larry Guyton first reported the shooting on Wednesday evening. The shooting occurred at Oakdale Homes.

One person was shot on Wednesday afternoon in Clarkton and two people have been detained for questioning, according to Guyton’s report.

Chief Deputy Guyton told BladenOnline that the victim, a male, was in serious condition when he was transported by Bladen County EMS to Cape Fear Valley-Bladen Hospital.

While at the hospital in Bladen County, Mr. Bernard Kemp, introduced as the father of the victim, told a BladenOnline.com reporter his oldest son [Mr. Lonnie Smith] had been shot multiple times. Mr. Kemp said the hospital staff informed him his son died.

The hospital parking lot was full of friends and family of Mr. Lonnie Level Smith. Ms. Augusta Smith is the mother of the 37 year old deceased man according to Kenneth Clark, Bladen County Deputy Coroner. Mr. Smith was a father and lived in Clarkton according Mr. Kemp. 

Sheriff Jim McVicker said the reason for the initial altercation is not known at this time. Investigators are currently interviewing a person of interest in the case and have identified several people involved in the incident and will be following up leads on these individuals and questioning them as well. McVicker did confirm Smith lived at 225 Jasmine Lane in Clarkton.

“Based on our preliminary investigation we understand a group of people got into a physical altercation and during that altercation a weapon was discharged striking one subject,” said McVicker.

“We will release further information as it becomes available,” he said. “Right now we are in the early stages of the investigation but I can tell you we are following leads vigorously.”

More information about the investigation will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
