A Staff Report

The Town of Bladenboro, known for its vibrant community spirit, has once again brought the joy of Christmas to life. This year’s celebration was not just any festive gathering; it marked the golden anniversary of the Bladenboro Christmas Parade, a tradition woven into the fabric of the town’s culture.

A Night of Lights and Harmony

On December 1, 2023, the streets of downtown Bladenboro were alive with anticipation and holiday cheer. The Wilmington Celebration Choir set a harmonious tone for the evening, their voices filling the air with beautiful seasonal songs during the tree lighting ceremony. This symbolic event, illuminated by the warm glow of the Christmas tree, served as a reminder of the true meaning of the holiday.

Community Connection at New Light’s Connect Center

Following the tree lighting, residents and visitors alike gathered at New Light’s Connect Center. Here, amidst games and laughter, the essence of community fellowship was a shining example. It was a night where memories were made and traditions celebrated.

Honoring the Origins on Saturday

The 50th Annual Bladenboro Christmas Parade was held on Saturday morning, December 2, 2023. According to one of the parade organizers, Jessica Hammonds, the possibility of rain in the forecast had parade organizers changing the start time from 10 am to 9 am, and it was a perfect fit. The streets were lined with parade watchers, and the parade entries did not disappoint.

Reflecting on the origins of the Christmas parade, Amanda Sykes shared a heartfelt memory. “It started with our Brownie Troop,” she recalled. Her mother, Sue Galloway, and Jane Walters were pioneering spirits behind this now-iconic parade. In honor of their contribution, Ms. Sue Galloway and Ms. Jane Walters were fittingly chosen as the Grand Marshals for this milestone parade.

Painting the Town

The window decorating contest, a showcase of local creativity and enthusiasm, further amplified the festivities. Some business owners decorated their windows themselves, and some enlisted Shelley Dove Tyree’s artistic talents

Cox Realty & Appraisal claimed first place in the contest, followed by Bladenboro Hardware and First Citizens Bank in second and third places, respectively. Their efforts added to the town’s festive ambiance and demonstrated the community’s collective spirit.

A unique tradition started last year with a plaque displayed at the business of the first-place winner, to be passed on each year to the new champion, creating a legacy of festive excellence.

Gratitude and Celebration

The Bladenboro Christmas Parade Committee extended heartfelt thanks to all who participated in the 50th annual parade. A special shout-out was given to the merchants for their beautifully decorated windows.

As Bladenboro wrapped up another successful start to the Christmas season, the town stood as a shining example of community spirit and festive joy. The 50th anniversary of the Bladenboro Christmas Parade was more than just a celebration; it was an example of the town’s rich heritage and community bond.
