A staff reportOfficials in Bladenboro have exciting news to share—the long-awaited grand opening of the new Town Square is finally here, and everyone is invited to join in the celebration. The Town of Bladenboro, County of Bladen, Bladen’s Bloomin’ Agri-Industrial, Inc., and Boost the Boro, Inc. extend a warm invitation to the public for the special occasion scheduled for March 1, 2024, at 125 and 131 Main Street in Bladenboro. Festivities will kick off at 11:30 am, culminating in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12- noon.

Downtown Bladenboro’s journey to this vibrant moment has been one of resilience and determination. The area has been flooded, with Hurricanes Matthew and Florence dealing devastating blows in 2016 and 2018. The aftermath of Hurricane Florence left much of the downtown area in ruins, with businesses decimated and buildings in disrepair. However, fueled by a collective commitment to revitalization, dedicated community members, including Boost the Boro, Inc., the Town of Bladenboro, Bladen County, Bladen’s Bloomin Agri-Industrial Inc., and North Carolina State Representative William Brisson, united to breathe new life into downtown Bladenboro.Chuck Heustess, Bladen County Economic Development Director, highlights the innovative design of the new Town Square, comprising two flood-resistant brick buildings connected by a boardwalk. This strategic planning ensures resilience against future flooding—a critical consideration for the area.

The journey to this grand opening has been years in the making. Beginning in 2017 with extensive community surveys, the project received a significant boost with a $900,000 Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant. Additional funding of $300,000 from the legislature facilitated vital demolition activities, paving the way for progress. Now, the once-dormant downtown area around Main Street has been transformed into a bustling hub of activity. The new Town Square boasts a variety of amenities, including office spaces, restaurants, beauty shops, barbershops, and retail stores, offering a diverse array of opportunities for both locals and visitors.

As Bladenboro’s new chapter unfolds, the grand opening of the Town Square stands as a symbol of resilience, community spirit, and unwavering dedication to a brighter future. With businesses open and the community buzzing with anticipation, the grand opening promises to be a joyous celebration of progress and possibility. For more information and related articles, visit these related articles:
