WILMINGTON – Sophomore Ronnie Covington fired in 14 points Thursday to lead East Bladen to a 50-37 boys’ basketball victory over Cary in the Hoggard Holiday Classic.
Senior Lee Barnes drilled in a pair of 3-point shots, and Covington dropped in 2 baskets in the opening quarter. Junior Kewone Maynor and sophomore Keyshawn Kemp added baskets as the Eagles edged ahead 14-13.
Peyton Tatum and Covington tossed in a basket and 2 free throws each to key an 11-7 Eagle surge. Junior Dominick Collins pumped in a basket and a free throw as East took a 25-20 halftime lead.
Maynor buried a 3-point shot and another basket in the 3rd quarter, and Collins drained 4 free throws. Kemp tacked on 2 foul shots, and Tatum and senior Rodney Lacewell made 1 free throw each as East opened up a 38-28 lead.
Covington powered in a basket then sank 4 straight free throws in the final period. Lacewell worked inside for a pair of baskets, and Tatum muscled in another basket.
Collins, Maynor and Tatum all finished with 7 points each for the winners. Barnes followed with 6 points, and Lacewell rang up 5 points. Junior Stone Holcombe topped the Cary scoring with 14 points.
Coach Aking Elting’s Eagles improved to 6-3 and will play Pamlico County Friday at 12 noon. Pamlico dropped to 5-6 Thursday night after a narrow 66-61 loss to the host Hoggard team.
