There will be a new platform for what has been known as Boy Scouts starting in February. Family Scouting offering iconic Boy Scouts of America programs to boys and girls was the topic of discussion presented by Boy Scout’s District Commissioner, Alex Hursey at Tuesday’s Kiwanis meeting.

He opened his topic by stating, “I’m not here to talk about Girl Scouts. Boy Scouts has decided to let girls in.”

The group discussed how Girl Scouts is completely different from Boys Scouts because it’s a completely different organization. One big difference — the Eagle Scout rank.

If you go to the military you can move up ranks because you are an Eagle Scout. Also, if your employment application has Eagle Scout rank as an achievement, you may receive jobs and position opportunities because of the Eagle Scout rank, according to Hursey.

The Girl Scouts does not offer any ranks that carry the same respect as an Eagle Scout, according to some former Girl Scouts who were in attendance.

The discussion continued. “Two girls are in Cub Scouts now,” Hursey announced.

Hursey, who is also local Scout Pack 622 leader, addressed the issue by saying, “Needless to say, it’s happened and so far it’s going great.”

As of right now, Pack 622 is all boys and will remain that way until February 1st. In February, the name will be changed to Scouts BSA, according to Hursey.

The Elizabethtown Kiwanis Club voted to sponsor the first ever Scouts BSA in Bladen County. The new sponsored troop will be a girls only troop in Dublin.

President of the Club, Jeff Futrell, and Secretary, Dr. Lisa Bryan, announced they are accepting applications from all high school students in East Bladen High School, West Bladen High School, Elizabethtown Key Club Members, Bladen County Charter, Private and/or Homeschoolers for their scholarship opportunities.

Vice President, Daine Smith, and the Key Club members in attendance announced the Key Club and Kiwanis Club will be working together on two service projects this year. One will be helping the Boys and Girls Clubs at Lake Waccamaw with damages from Hurricane Florence. The other will be helping a Bladen County resident with repairs to damages at their home they received during the storm as well.

Last but not least, Dr. Bryan announced the clubs will also be working together for this year’s Relay for Life. Raffle tickets are being sold now for a Dell Laptop for $5 per ticket. Anyone interested in purchasing a ticket may contact a Kiwanis member.

If you are interested in joining the Kiwanis Club or the Key Club they meet the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Cindy’s Restaurant.
