ELIZABETHTOWN –Tar Heel scored 15 runs in the top of the 1st inning then held on for a 17-15 Waccamaw Middle School Conference softball victory over Elizabethtown Wednesday.

It was the 1st win of the season for the Lady Panthers (1-8) who will play Emereau Bladen at Bladen County Park Thursday. Elizabethtown is now 0-8.

Serenity Council was hit by a pitch to start the game and sprinted home ahead of Abigail Dew who slugged a 2-run home run for a quick 2-0 Tar Heel lead. Everlee Nance was hit by a pitch, and Giselle Lara, Ja’Leah Purdie, and Roslyn Sanchez all drew 2 walks and scored 2 runs in the inning.

Ashley Solis Sandoval, Austyn Newell, Council and Nance walked 1 more time each in the inning and all of them scored 1 run each. Solis Sandoval and Dew smacked singles and scored runs as the Lady Panthers built the 15-0 lead.

Racquel Whittington, Calleigh Smith and Zariyah Riddy all drew walks and scored runs in the Elizabethtown half of the inning. Kamariah Rhodie, Gabbi West and K.C. Chambers also drew walks, but the Lady Cougars left the bases loaded.

Council and Shaley McKoy drew walks in the Tar Heel 2nd inning, and Lara belted a single. Council scored to stretch the lead to 16-3.

Racquel Whittington was hit by a pitch, and Avianna Whittington, Smith, Sana’a Singletary, Rhodie and West drew walks. Riddy laced a single, and both Racquel and Avianna Whittington, Smith, Singletary and Riddy all scored to slice the Lady Panther lead to 16-8. Elizabethtown had 2 runners tagged out at the plate in the inning attempting to score on wild pitches.

Sanchez cracked a single and scored a run in the Tar Heel 3rd inning to boost the lead to 17-8.

Racquel Whittington smashed a single and circled the bases on an error to start the Elizabethtown 3rd inning. Avianna Whittington was hit by a pitch, and Smith, Singletary, Rhodie, West and Chambers drew walks. Avianna Whittington, Smith and Singletary all scored to trim the lead to 17-12, but once again the Lady Cougars left the bases loaded.

Racquel Whittington walked, and Avianna Whittington drilled a single to start the Elizabethtown 4th inning. Singletary walloped a 3-run home run to slice the Tar Heel lead to 17-15. The Lady Cougars drew 2 more walks, but Tar Heel held on for the victory.

Dew batted 2-for-4 with a home run, 2 runs batted in and 2 runs scored to lead the Lady Panther hitters. Sanchez, Solis Sandoval and Lara added 1 hit each. Council and Sanchez scored 3 runs each. Nance, Lara, Purdie, and Solis Sandoval scored 2 runs each. Newell scored 1 run. Tar Heel used 5 hits, 13 walks and 4 hit batters to score their runs.

Singletary blasted the 3-run homer and scored 3 runs in the game. Racquel Whittington singled and scored 4 runs. Avianna Whittington singled and scored 3 runs. Smith scored 3 runs, and Riddy singled and scored twice. Elizabethtown drew 19 walks and had 4 hits, but left 8 runners on base and had 2 more tagged out at the plate.

“It was a good game,” said Elizabethtown Coach Chris Davisson. “We fought back after giving up so many in the first. The crowd was into it all the way to the end.”
