WHITEVILLE – Senior Garrett Melvin fired in the game’s only goal two minutes into the 2nd half as East Bladen edged Whiteville 1-0 in non-conference boys soccer action Monday.

“We had taken a shot and the goal keeper was trying to bring it in,” said Eagle Coach Jay Raynor. “Garrett was able to take advantage of his bobbling the shot and finished into the right side of the goal. Heck of a heads up play by Garrett.”

Raynor continued, “Jay McKoy, Freddy (Wooten), Chase (Starkloff), and Jacob (Priest) had amazing games tonight. Jacob was tested a lot but the back line of those other 3 kept the game in front of them. We just weren’t on the same page today and those 3 cleaned up our mistakes.”

The Eagles out shot Whiteville 6-1 in the 1st half and 11-1 in the 2nd half. Priest was credited with one save as he recorded his 3rd shutout of the season.

“For whatever reason we seemed a step slow or hesitant to make a play tonight,” stated Raynor. “The game was physical but that shouldn’t have been a factor. All in it was a good win against a tough opponent in a tough environment, but we have to be better.”

Raynor added, “I challenged them at halftime and I felt they responded better. Especially Will Hester. Will did a much better job of helping us find the game in the 2nd half. We keep the majority of the game on their half and he directed a lot of our attacks.”

The Eagles remained unbeaten at 3-0 and will host Red Springs Wednesday at 4:30.
