BLADENBORO –Freshman Marchello Benavides fired in 2 goals to lead North Brunswick to a 3-1 non-conference boys’ soccer victory over West Bladen Wednesday night.

Junior Diego Dominguez tallied a goal and an assist for the Scorpions, and junior Vance Wheeler had an assist as North built a 2-0 halftime lead.

“The first half we scrambled to stay in the game and hold our composure,” said Knight Coach Kristen Parker. “After some reorganization at halftime, we returned to the play and looked much better defensively. We were able to generate a few opportunities to score.”

Parker continued, “An error on defense put them up 3-0, but we responded with a good run and earned a free kick. Chris Labra placed a nice ball in the upper 90 – out of the reach of the keeper.” Labra’s goal trimmed the margin to 3-1.

It was the first loss of the season for the Knights, who own a 3-1 record.

“We couldn’t fully recover from the deficit this game and didn’t get the result we were seeking, but we look forward to a rematch at their place next Tuesday,” stated Parker.

There will be a jayvee game Tuesday at 4:30 with the varsity to follow. The North jayvees were unable to make the trip to West Bladen due to transportation issues.
