BURGAW – West Bladen led Pender 3-2 six minutes before halftime when the stormy weather ended their boys’ soccer season opener. Since the teams didn’t complete the half, it was not an official game.

“Having that ‘W’ would have been nice,” said Knight Coach Kristen Parker. “But even though it doesn’t count, the guys made some great plays and for the first official game, I am very pleased.”

Junior Kevyn De La Cruz Labra opened the West scoring knocking in a goal off a feed from sophomore Jonah Bryan. Junior Christopher Ramirez Labra blasted in a penalty kick for the 2nd Knight goal.

Bryan banged in the 3rd goal off of a cross from Kevyn Labra on what Coach Parker called “an incredible header.”

“Oswaldo Gonzalez-Lopez had 2 huge saves in goal that kept us in the lead,” added Parker.

Pender edged West Bladen 2-1 in the junior varsity game. Enrique Rodriguez-Gonzalez drilled in an unassisted goal for the Knights.

The Knights will host Purnell Swett Wednesday at 6 p.m.
