NEW YORK, NY – Former West Bladen star Brandon Council, who currently starts at guard for the Auburn Tigers, has been selected as a nominee for the 2021 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Ten times during the 2021 season, 3 college football student-athletes who have overcome injury, illness and other challenges, are chosen to be Comeback Player of the Year Nominees by a panel of writers, editors and sports information directors from the College Sports Information Directors of America, Associated Press and Touchdown Illustrated.

In December, 3 of the 30 nominees will be chosen as winners of the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award and will be recognized at a special ceremony during the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl on January 1, 2022 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ.

Other notable nominees include Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan, Florida State quarterback McKenzie Milton, Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross and Penn State running back Noah Cain.

Council came to Auburn as a graduate transfer from Akron and started the first 5 games of the 2020 season before tearing the ACL of his left knee against Mississippi on October 24. It was the 2nd serious injury of his career as he had missed the entire 2018 season at Akron due to knee surgery.

While the Tar Heel native was rehabbing his knee after the 2020 injury, he suffered a torn labrum that kept him out of spring practice. By the time 2021 training camp began, Council was participating fully in practice and earned back his starting spot for the season opener, a 60-10 victory over his previous school, Akron.

The 6-foot-5, 335-pound guard has started the first 9 games for the Tigers who have posted a 6-3 record. With Council leading the way Auburn ranks 5th in the Southeastern Conference in points scored and rushing yards per game.

Council and the 16th-ranked Tigers will host Mississippi State Saturday at noon on ESPN.
