Elizabethtown, NC -The latest gathering of the Elizabethtown Foxglove Garden Club witnessed an enlightening and engaging presentation by three distinguished guests: George W. Mote, Jr., Owner and Operations Manager of Mote Plantation Farms; Jennifer S. Mote, Owner and Sales Manager; and their daughter, the reigning Junior Miss Dublin Peanut, Paris Mote. Held at the local San Jose Restaurant, the meeting was graced by the Mote family, who shared insights into their family-owned farming enterprise and their passion for cultivating various berries.

George began the presentation by offering attendees a fascinating overview of the farming industry, peppered with fun facts and the rich history of their 135-acre berry farm located just 3 miles north of White Lake, NC. He oversees and manages all farming operations, while Jennifer takes charge of local and on-farm sales.

The Mote Plantation Farms specializes in an array of berries, including Blueberries, Blackberries, Raspberries, and Strawberries. Their commitment to quality is exemplified by their USDA GAP Certification, earned in 2023 with a Superior Rating, ensuring that their fresh-packed fruit meets the highest standards.

Notably, their products are not limited to domestic markets but are also exported to Canada and other parts of the world. For locals, they offer on-farm sales at the Farm Store/Office located at 2002 Mote Road, Harrells, NC 28444, and they have exciting plans to expand with satellite locations in Columbus, Cumberland, Robeson, and Sampson Counties in 2024, coinciding with the peak harvest of each commodity.

George also shared their future vision of becoming an agri-tourism destination, inviting people from near and far to experience the beauty and vibrancy of their farm.

During the presentation, the club members were treated to valuable insights into cultivating Blackberries, Raspberries, and Strawberries. George highlighted that these perennial plants can produce for up to 8 years with proper maintenance and irrigation in a commercial setting. He emphasized the importance of soil pH levels, training the plants for vertical growth, and post-harvest care for optimal yield.

Regarding Strawberries, George explained that they are short-term perennial plants, often replaced annually for higher yields. He reiterated the significance of soil pH, pruning, and nutrient management to ensure robust growth and fruitful harvests.

As a token of appreciation, the Mote family generously gifted each garden club member with a basket of fall strawberries and a blueberry plant, further cementing the bonds between their farm and the local community.
